Default Can't get shift knob back on

Apologies for starting a new thread, but I did a search and couldn't come up with much.

The stock shift knob in my car has come off, and I can't get it firmly back on. When I attempt to screw it back on, it mostly slides down the shaft and doesn't really "catch" on the threading. I'm really not very mechanically inclined - is there something I need to do so that it won't simply slide on/off? I'm guessing superglue isn't the answer.

Thanks for any advice,
Justin

'slides up and down' the stock knob?! it sounds as though the threads inside the knob are all gone..if thats the case, you either have to get it sleeved with a plastic insert or get a new knob

Are you using the lock nut?

The threads may very well be gone - I'll check tonight when I'm able to see the car again (been a few weeks). If so, is this plastic sleeving available from the local dealer without buying a new shift knob?

Also: what's this about a lock nut? I know there was some tiny little "button" somewhere on the shifter, but I wasn't aware it had much to do with this...

Thanks again for your help.

Are you sure you are using a stock knob? He-Man must have tried to put it on before to strip out the threads.

Can you post a picture?

I finally saw the car again last night - the threading was definitely stripped. However, after looking at eBay, I've come to discover it's not the OEM shift knob. I'm just probably going to end up buying one of those.

Thanks for all the info!

Time to invest in a tap-and-dye set. :-)

Don't go with eBay cheapies. Get another OEM one, people sell them used on the forum. ~$30-45 shipped depending on which OEM wants you want.

Well does the knob have a set screw on the side? That might have been what was holding it on.
