Billman- if a person has clutch play before it engages would this sometimes keep a gear from engaging correctly. Sometimes going from 1st to 2nd it doesn't want to go. I never grind or force it but it go back to 1st and then try second and then it usually goes in. What could be going on here??

I have never seen a clutch that wasn't properly adjusted from the factory.
It is long winded to expalin the adj procedure, I've got a few threads on it already.

You can adjust how much play is at the top just by screwing down the switch attached to the pedal for the cruise control. If you want to adjust the throw you have to adjust the rod going into the slave cylinder. Although not hard, you need to be careful with both and use common sense or you will severly shorten your clutch life. Do it right and you'll enjoy your S even more. Good luck.

Wow, interesting. I just stumbled across this thread, searched up on what Billman250 said (thread: https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=289807 ), went outside and checked mine. I've had a mild, occasional "click" from 2nd to 3rd in my car. Sure enough, the rod was out of adjustment by two or three turns. Adjusted it to zero free-play and things are silky smooth now. No more "click", yet engagement is still very firm if you pop the clutch.
Thanks for the info!

The main thing to understand is there are two different freeplays.
The first is the rod slopping around in the back of the master. This should be removed, or set to zero freeplay.
The second is the hydraulic play built into the master, it is critical that this freeplay is left alone.
