Can we lighten a crank?
#2
Import Builders? I think they knife edge the weights on the cranks in their built F20C. I don't know if they have less weight though. I wonder if removing weight from the crank would disturb the balance of the motor? I suppose it depends on where its taken from....

Balance is critical, strength is critical, and the crank in this engine is probably close to optimum from the factory. What are you thinking you will accomplish? I would put my efforts elsewhere.

Always remember, the more power you make, the more weight you need in the crank. Have you seen a Pro Stock crank? They look like they came out of a huge truck and those guys spin 11,000. I'm not saying don't do it, but I am saying err on the side of too much material rather than too little.

pierceman, I'm not sure you got any info to make a decision on. Removing weight from a crank is a time honored method of freeing up hp.
Any knife edging always involves grinding and weight loss.
My advice, go to a balancing shop in your area and let them take a look at it. They can tell you what material can be removed and where to remove it from to maintain balance. As for strength... a lot depends on what you remove. Can you post a picture of the S2000, crank as all I have seen are in the block.

Oh, BTW, if you do remove any material the crank will have to be rebalanced anyway. The balance shap does this by spinning the crank in a machine that identifies the balance problem. It is corrected by grinding away more material from the heavy end.
