I bought a used transmission and can tell you prices generally run from about $600 to $2000 depending upon year model and miles. Installation will cost from $300 to $800 depending upon the shop. The AP2 transmissions are more desirable so they always cost more.

It does seem many posters are relaying experiences based upon use of the AP2 transmissions which are improved and have fewer issues with synchronization. Honda had to deal with many assembly problems with the early AP1 transmissions where many were sometimes pretty crappy to drive. The first year they blamed all the problems on 'stacking tolerance' where supposedly each part was in spec but assembled components were not and therefore affected shift quality. There was a TSB and some transmissions were worked on with varying degrees of success... mine was never right.

AP2 transmissions were much improved and later ones even got better synchros so that is what to buy if you can get a price. The box I bought was the cheapest low mileage one I could find which was out of an '02' priced at $595 but I bargained and picked it up for $500.

I"ve driven multiple manual tranny cars.

The S2000 is the smoothest easiest shifting tranny ever made. Every magazine review from back in the day said the same thing. Almost as smooth as the Integra was.

I can sift every gear with my fingertips.

If you can't, something is wrong. But...that doesn't mean you have to replace it. You decide if you want to live with it or not.

My AP2 shifts perfectly, but only if I execute it perfectly. Like others have said, it can be very dependent on rpm, shift timing, shift speed, 'gated' lever motion, etc.

I think this thread and others demonstrate some S shift better than others, and some owners adapt and live with it, others buy a used trans and hope for better luck of the draw this time, some experiment with different trans fluids, and others search for answers until one of the above works for them.

Everything?

Did you clean and grease the splines?

If you now go like "Splines... what splines?" you forgot to do the most important thing installing a clutch.

Sounds like you still have air bubbles in the clutch fluid.

And no one actually asked what fluid are you using in the trans? OEM? GM Syncromesh? Amsoil?
