I would do further inspection on th retainers. you don't want any valves to drop.
We didn't see any cracks on the top side of retainers when we pulled the vavle cover but the button side all had cracked.

look to see if any of the valve stems are sitting lower than the others. that one of the signs of broken retainers.

alittle more update:
the head was pulled and exhuast valves were all bent.

The valve stems are all in the correct position in relation to the retainers. Cam lobes all look nice and polished too. They might need to be replaced but I don't feel like catastrophic failure is imminent. I'm going to put it back together and drive gently for a few weeks till I get the time/money to do a valvetrain tune-up. Aside from upgrading intake retainers to AP2 parts and a valve adjustment what else does anyone suggest while I'm in there with everything apart?

I seriously don't want to pull the head. Will a compression/leak-down test shed any light on the condition of the valves? Given the fact that nothing even looks remotely damaged with the cams and retainers should I even be concerned that valves could be bent?

Thanks guys for all the input.

Valve stem to retainer realtive position means nothing. It's retainer to keeper relation you want to look at.

yes if someone knows what they are doing, a leakdown will find even the slightest bent valve.

You will also likely need a roller rocker. They are purchased as a 3 piece matched set and cannot be split up. When you look at the bottom of the rocker, you will see two triangle shaped impressions due to contact with the retainer.

If you only have a few scratches and not the sand blasted look do you need new roller rocker arms? All the diys I read only say retainers and cutters for replacement parts. Though none mention anything about the cam damage.

No. You will need a camshaft and a roller rocker only if the retainer is scraping on the roller.

There are no scratches. The lines you are seeing are normal.

Doing a valve adjustment and the 1-3 lobes all are polished nicely, and the exhaust valves have been a little on the tight side.

But #4 looked to have more of a darker wear and more towards the peak of the lobe. It is still smooth, no grooves or anything. What do you think?

Cylinder 4 on the left, 3 on the right. 1 & 2 look just like 3.

And I checked the retainers out as well as i could with a small mirror and they all appear to be the same...none depressed any that I can tell.

Your cams are perfect.

Take a VERY good look at the retainer, intake side, one spot from the back. It seems to always be the first to crack.

Whew that's what I was hoping to hear. I will check that one out again before I put it all back together.
Thanks
