Cam lobe wear mark
#22
The middle of the lobe has a sandblasted appearance. That is from contact with hardened metal powder from the retainer.
Take it apart and replace the retainers and keepers with AP2 parts.
This job is not too bad and SHOULD BE DONE with the cylinder head in place on the car. No need to remove it. Pulling the head to do retainers is like pulling the engine to change the oil

s2000maniac, I am afraid that yours looks very much like mine.
and it is almost impossible to see the crack during inspection with removing the cams. with the cams removed, you can see the valves on the broken retainer will appear to be lower than the good retainer.
but either way I think it would be a good idea for you to replace them anyways.

sorry dude, but from the looks of that pic, its definitely a cracked retainer, you should only be able to see the first ledge of the inside part of the retainer. If the cotters sink below that angled edge it is almost always a cracked retainer.

With regards to the cam wear. Are we looking at the overall discoloration or the texture on some of the cam lobes? I'm a complete join but I don't think I've ever seen a cam without some discoloration where the cam is making contact...

If one wants a more definite answer from people looking at pics over the interweb about "Are my retainers cracked - or not" one should post clearer pictures.
IOW: use more light.
It is possible you know.....
Healty AP1 retainer.

s2000maniac, there is nothing showing on your cams that indicate broken retainers. Your retainer pics themselves are not clear enough to judge.
hrpfg2, your intake cam is NOT re-useable. Dont worry about the other end just now, just fix the retainers.
