Cam alignment marks

Cam alignment marks
Well to make a long story short I had to get my cylinder head rebuilt. Before I pulled my cams I found that that the markings on the cams were facing out and now that I am putting it back in, the helms manual says the cam markings should be facing each other. My question is should I put it back the way i found it or put it back the way the manual says.
Thanks in advance.

The manual says that they should face each other. At that point the idler gear marks should be also lined up with the edge of the head, and all that when the crank pulley mark is lined up at TDC (Top Dead Center), which is the white notch.
Read slowly if confused the first time:
1. line up TDC: rotate crank pulley clockwise 'til white mark faces the point on the triangle.
2. Check the idler gear's marks. They should be level with the edge of the head.
3. set the cams in so that their marks are facing each other.
4. Search for a DIY to double-check.

You will probably find that your engine was 1 crankshaft turn out which you disassembled which would have the cam wheels 180degrees out. ( they rotate at half crank speed).
Follow the Helms manual guidelines.
