Default Buzzing sound from rear of car when car is off

My friend has an 01 that makes a faint buzzing sound every 5-10 minutes when the car is off. It can be heard if you're standing within a couple feet of the car. It seems to be the loudest near the rear driver's side wheel well as far as we can tell. It seems like it's something electrical of course, could it be the fuel pump trying to prime or the top motors trying to engage but not getting enough current? Like could this be a sign of a problem in the electrical system? Are there any quick and convenient places to disable power to the top or fuel pump so we can try to eliminate them as sources? Any ideas of any other components that could be emitting a buzzing sound?

For starters disconnect the battery and see if the problem persists. If it stops it then put in the battery and start pulling fuses till it stops?

sounds like fuel pump. it's near the driver's side rear wheel.

There's def a problem if it's turning on when the car is off.

My car does this too. Can't say its every time, but I've definitely heard it while working on the car for extended periods of times. Maybe it only does it when the key is in?

Sorry I can't help more, but my car does something similar. I just don't know the exact circumstances.

I hear it on mine too, although only when i just switched off my engine.. I thought it was just priming the fuel pump for 5-10mins, i don't hear it after a while...

sounds like a truck from a distance.. kind of like a howling...

maybe something i should look at?

lol we know it goes away when the battery is disconnected.

Are there specific fuses for the FP and top? I'd like to be able to disable as little as possible at a time so that we can eliminate potential sources.

The car isn't designed to attempt to prime the pump a little every so often even when off is it? lol

I don't know, might be a long shot.. But might have something to do with cooling things down? My TT has this feature, a pump runs for about 2 mins after driving.. It cools down the turbine/blah blah..

I wouldn't worry about it to be honest, but let me know if I should. lol

Just noticed mine is doing this too. Agree that it sounds like fuel pump priming...

Car is cold (not started for days), locked, and key is in the house!

My drivetrain, fuel system, and ECU are all stock.

Any suggestions?

Whaddaya know, search worked. Seems it's a normal part of the fuel vapor emissions system; can be stopped by releasing the gas cap.

(Admittedly, same guy posted this knowledge in all 3 threads, so if he's wrong, we're screwed. )

Yes it's a pump pressurizing the fuel tank for emission purposes, but I thought the cure was to ensure the fuel cap was firmly secured so it could hold pressure.
