Burning too much oil?

^ I agree with a lot of what you wrote. A lot of GOOD! Dino oils are closing the gap with the lesser synthetics. Mobil is riding on it's name more than it should, that is certain.
My oil of choice is Castrol 0-30. It is a true POA group 4 oil and turns STELLAR! oil analysis numbers in every LS1 I ever saw it tested in. Is it right for an S2K? I dont know, but if 0-40 is recommended in the manual (14+ CST) then I doubt 0-30 (12.1 CST) is going to be a problem. That oil is EXTREMELY! stable as it uses no viscosity modifiers in the base oil. Go to www.ls1tech.com and do a search for "German Castrol" and you can find anything you ever wanted to know about it (and more, lmao).
Mobil 1 is not a great choice. Period
That being said my main issue was that the NOACK scores are NOT! pointing out the reason M1 has such a bad rep for oil consumption. I don't care HOW tight your motor is, 0-20 will lose more than 0-30. A 30 weight Mobil 1 becomes a 20 weight in a few K miles. Even when it is a 30 weight its on the lowest end of the spectrum at 10.1 CST.
Point in case, dont us 30 weight Mobil 1 and expect 0 consumption. Doesn't matter why. I don't care if you get shot with a .45 or a Howitzer, you are still dead. Same thing with this situation. I don't care (other than for the sake of debate) how the oil is leaving the engine...IT IS. Period. If you have an issue with mobil 1, pick another oil.

The entire forum post summed up perfectly!
N/Apower you may or may not be familiar with Road Rage. He's been this forums' expert (been silent for a while though).
One of his basic points was that there are a lot of good oils out there (and a few great ones), and to choose the one that works best for you. M1 is not one of the great oils - it's expensive for a 'good' oil. However, if you don't mind spending the extra cash and you don't have a consumption problem, stick with it. If your car is burning a lot of oil - change to another brand and see if the trend continues.

There are things called "tolerances" A tighter car might like the Penzoil Platinum at a 10.3 CST while a looser one might prefer Valvoline's 11.0 CST thickness. Both are 30 weight. Both cars are in good shape. One will just get better wear numbers from the others. That being said, Mobil 1's quality has diminished greatly. PP is a great oil though.

Please do!
Post UOA after 3000-5000 miles.
Do a dyno run and prove you have + 5-10 hp.
I would recommend you get an oil temp / pressure gauge though.
Just to keep your eye on what the oil is doing.
Oil usage in the S2000 is in my opinon a mechanical / design issue.
Mechanical as in oil scraper piston ring leaves too much oil behind.
Design as in the PCV air flow through the crank case into the intake manifold.
Using Krank Vents to create some vacuum in the crank case and stop the air flow certainly reduced the oil consuption of my MY00 - 129000km F20C2.
Reduced it to half a liter in 2800 km.
Using 0W-30. (9.6 cSt @ 100C)
In fact, I'm so sick of seeing you "thick oil is better" guys around here I'm about to run 0w20 in my S2k just to prove you all wrong.

Can anyone recommend a good oil for the s2000? I will try switching from Mobil 1 because of excessive burning, hopefully another oil will help.
thanks

Whatever oil you choose - you'll need to give it two oil changes to see a difference (the first change won't get all the old stuff out). I do what I call a 'quick change' when I switch oils.
I'll change the oil, drive for about 1000-1500 miles, and then change it again. I return to a normal change interval following the 2nd change.
Another oil you may want to consider is Redline. I'm not a huge fan of their gear oils, but their motor oils are good. Redline is a bit more expensive than Amsoil. Redline's SI-1 is the best fuel treatment I've used.

Penzoil Platinum is a pretty good oil from all I hear. So is 0-30 German Castrol if you want something thicker. Amsoil is also very good stuff, but harder to find. Of the 3 PP is cheaper/easier to find, GC is only sold at large autozones in the US.
