It cost roughly the same or more in labor and parts total to recon/do minimum piston/rings in this engine then buying a used long block and bolting it in complete. And as mentioned before, I dont trust that there is enough capable people to do a proper rebuild on this engine. The OP already went down this road and only got 20k out of the rebuilt engine. Ive experienced the same with a sleeved/built bottom end. Drank 1q oil every 1500 miles right out of the box and by 20k miles i was drinking 1Q every 250-300 miles and though it still ran good/smooth enough, the constant smoke show, and cost/annoyance of topping of the oil to this magnitude caused me to retire that motor and go back to buying a used long block which is what I should had done to begin with.

I have 6 spare blocks for my MGA and 2 spares for my Volvo so I'm ok with a replacement engine for the OP. Just that to me it wasn't necessarily a foregone conclusion.

OP, I have no S2000 engine experience, but I'd look into new rings with a possible overbore. Find a reputable and S2000 experience mechanic.

To me the question would be whether cost of a rebuild is more than cost of a replacement.
I have to say, unlike any other engine, I would not attempt a rebuild on the lower end of an s2k motor. Too many failed attempts reported in these pages for my taste. I might do it if I could find someone with a track record of rebuilding these motors successfully, meaning the rebuilt motors lasted a long long time. Otherwise, forget it. Throwing good money after bad in my opinion.
