Burning 2.5 quarts of Mobil 1 in ~4000 miles?

I've used Mobil 1 10W30 and Amsoil Signature Series 10W30 and oil consumption is the same for me.
I'm probably going to try Pennzoil Platinum next. The Amsoil is probably superior to all these oils, but is a pain to get and very pricey.
I figure for my type of conservative driving, a nice $25 jug from Walmart will do.
That or Rotella T6, which I read is also very good and less prone to oil consumption, though I'm wary to move to heavier oil.
From reading the countless oil threads and my own experience, all AP1s seems to burn some amount of oil and each engine responds differently to each of oil. Some will burn excessively, some will burn minimally, quite mysterious why there's so much variation.
Also, I hope you didn't let the engine get 2.5 quarts low, I'd make it a point to check the oil level at least every gas fill up.

The manual states it's fine to use a 40w oil, Castrol 0w-40 is 12.4 cTs at operating temperature, and it would probably end up being closer to the 10 cTs recommended for our cars after a little fuel dilution that is common in older engines. The service manual states that between 9-14 cTs is acceptable, has anyone tried 0w-40 on a street s2000, maybe in warmer climates?

If you guys aren't yet familiar with bobistheoilguy.com. I suggest reading up on it.
I'm never a fan of reasons such as so so engine eats this or that. Oil loss should be able to be explained. It's either making it past the rings, leaking out of a seal. On a healthy engine, oil shouldn't be consumed without a reasonable explanation.
In terms of good oil or not good oil. The proper viscosity needs to be achieved at temp plain and simple.
This isn't mine, it's what I could find quickly by google.

Oil gets whipped up, especially during vtec, sucked out the crank case vents, and recirculated back into the engine through the intake manifold. That's where it goes on AP1s when you have low to moderate (normal) oil loss.
