gernby, how long u had your dampers now? If they are not leaking or making clunky noises you should be fine...
I guess the break in period is just overly cautious fellas... or fellas like me who cant afford rebuilds hence believe grandma stories of breakin procedures...

I always believed that if coilovers are meant to be break in with the softest settings then they would have been pre-set and delived that way...which in reality...doesnt happen. (my BC's arrived with mid stiffness settings)

I have over 10K miles on them. They seem like new, but I have noticed that the dirt at the top 1" of the damper body looks slightly oily. I am just watching to see if it changes any.

I'm with Gernby, I never broke in my coilovers either. I just set them "halfway" to test out the ride and took it easy the first couple of hundred miles. Then I went for an agressive street alignment. I could not be happier with the results.

Preloading the suspension is different than preloading the dampers. The two lock collars on your dampers should be left alone(if anything just make sure they are snug against each other). When you preload the suspension you are jacking up the suspension arm you are working on until that side of the car just lifts off the jackstand. At that point you torque the suspension bolts bolts to spec.

The concept is to allow more suspension movement initially to wear in the dampers first.

It is one of those things people do, like taking it easy on a new motor. No one can prove anyone else wrong. A lot of people go through their lives not knowing cars need to be broken in and they don't have any problems.
