Lesson for all of us:

Rough idle after overrev = time to check your retainers straight away!
Stretched/cracked retainers don't affect the idle. I think the rough idle means that damage beyond the retainers has already been done (since the rough idle is probably due to a bent valve not seating fully).

I'd say it's best to check the retainers after ANY over rev, and after seeing this I'm inclined to say that if the idle is rough afterward, I'd shut the car off and have it towed. Once a valve is bent there is already damage, and driving the car can only make things worse.

Has anyone figured out the revs involved here yet? I'm thinking something over 10,500, but that's just a guesstimate.

How rough idle are we talking here? I overreved my b18c motor at the track and idled like it was going to stall if I didn't keep on the gas. It sounded like a harley at idle but it drove fine on the way home. I pulled the head after a leakdown test a local shop told me there was a small leak. There was no damage anywhere i sight. The head shop presure tested it and confirmed that there was a leak.

the idle wasnt that bad, but noticable. it seemed like a dirty throttle body or something stupid. it wasnt bad enough to worry me, so be careful not to over rev. you may be on the verge of a big problem and not even know it.

Tell me about it, when I first got my car, before I had a feel for the shifter, I was merging on the freeway when i missed fourth and hit second slightly before putting the clutch. I seen the redline blink so I had the retainers and valve clearance inspected. Some of the valves were out of spec( not shure if thats the norm for a s2000 with 35000miles) so they were adjusted to spec and the retainers were given a clean bill of health after introducing the honda mechanics to billmans retainer thread.
