Default broken tap in crank

hi everyone at s2ki, my name is billy and I have done my research about the f20c1. My problem is that my friend broke a tap off in the cranks threads, it's about 1/4 inch deep, I'm trying to get an idea of how much I could sell the block as is. I don't have the time or a car to put it in. (EK sedan) so I just want an idea of what a best ofer would be. I know what the going rate is for a f20c block is but not one with a crank, knock senor,pistons...etc . any info or ideas would be greatly appericated.
thanks

Get a tig welder and weld a lump on the broken off bit of the tap so you have something to grip it with.

Alternatively, get a nut with a 8mm hole and use a mid welder to weld through the nut onto the broken off bit and then use the nut to wind it out.

Just be careful not to weld the broken off bit into the crank itself.

There are also things called disintegrators that you will find people who specialise in broken bolts and taps use. This uses a salt solution and a DC current to electrolyse away the broken tap. They are really groovy as they erode the core out of the tap and the teeth just fall into the hole left.

Good luck.. Broken taps are really difficult to remove without damaging the threads.

There is a way to EDM (electric discharge machine) the tap out, but you have to remove the crankshaft and find machine shop than can do it.

wow, Thank you both chris barry and slows2k. I've heard about the different welding tricks from a friend because an extractor most likely won't go through tool steel but the nut trick is very interesting. I have never heard of disintegrators or EDM. Thanks you guys are awsome! lol. I was going to try and put it in my EK but I know the nightmares and money involved with that swap so I'm just looking to get rid of it..... but your info and links very usefull info. again thanks

I'd also be worried that the reason the tap broke was it is the wrong size. The bolts that hold the flywheel on are very fine threaded, the tap for it is not easily available. IIRC it is a 10x.8 tap

yeah, you see I wasn't the one to put the tap in there so I don't know if its been cross threaded either. I'm thinking just throw the crank out and sell or trade the block or leave it as is? I was going to take it to the machine shop and have them do it but I also want it rehoned but they don't have the machine for FRM cylinders, I was going to have it all done at one shop but I'm thinking of giving this project up if I can't grt anything out of it ..we shall see

What are you suggesting he use to drill a hole in the middle of the broken tap with?

Taps are made from some very hard material.

Drill bits are also made from very hard steel, probably harder than this broken tap.

You are not going to be able to drill a hole in the center of a broken tap. The drill bit will loose.
