break in period
Hiya,
I've heard some conflicting information about the break in period. The manual says don't go above 5500 rpms for 600 miles. Someone else on this board said not to baby the car during the break in period. A salesman at the dealership told me to drive it like I want to be able to drive it later on (VTEC) otherwise it will be sluggish. A friend of mine told me they break in aircraft engines at full throttle.
So what do I do? I have around 350 miles on the car now. I've only gone above 5500 rpms for a brief second once, most of the time it's between 3500 and 4500.
It's going to take some effort to convince myself not to shift at 4500 rpms. That's where it sounds like it's supposed to shift at (compared to all the other stick shifts I've owned).

Don't VTEC for the first 600 miles. Vary the RPMs when driving. Don't floor the accelerator.
After that, ease up on the redline until you reach 1000 miles or so if you can. The bottom line is that during break-in, the engine has the highest rate of wear of it's life when machined parts are wearing together. Treat it right now to increase your chances of having a trouble free engine.

Give us an example, how much past redline did you go? Your trips past red were just brief moments at high RPM correct? How often did you go beyond red?
Please advise.
