I had heard some other suspect stuff about complex harmonics within the engine and how wear (including break in wear) happens at in different places of bearings and cylinder walls at different frequencies (RPMs). Constant RPMs caused wear in specific places and unevenly so you wound up with an engine that you thought was run in but was still tight (or loose depending on which bit you are talking about).

Like I say sounds suspect.

Mr h
One more thing that you brought up is the concern with components other than the cylinder walls, such as the bearings. One other mechanism in particular that can be susceptible to varying rpms is the camshaft and lifters, which also go through a (short) break in period. Running too fast, or at one rpm could conceivably cause issues there too.

So can we use VTECH after 600 miles? Whoops couldn't help it, I have already.

Absolutely! Otherwise the VTEC cam lobes will not get broken in!

What about accelerating hard from a cruising speed like drop the hammer to second when going about 40 and gunning it hard?
Whoops already done that too. (only a couple of times not at every on ramp).
The one thing I haven't done is to do a hard acceleration from stand still all the way through the gears.
This whole break in thing is tuff.

As long as you're being relatively careful, full-throttle VTECing shouldn't be a big issue - that's pretty much how VTEC was intended to operate! IOW, as break-in progresses, drive it more and more like you're planning to drive it after break-in - that's what will establish the wear patterns you'll need when you go to synthetic. I'd worry more about your new transmission, which will also need some TLC during its break-in period.
