I personally keep them on because I'm more worried about throwing a rock into the underside of my car as opposed to shaving 5lbs off the curb weight, but I don't keep them on thinking "thank god I have my dust shield on, one day it may save my life."

As I stated before it's because mine got beat up in the rear. I wanted to know if it is safe to remove them and I also wanted to know if it will help keep the brakes cool. I wanted to know all their purposes on the car as I like to know how things work.

I know on my 240sx's i remove them because I upgraded to bigger brakes (Z32 4 piston calipers) and the rotor would not clear. I didn't want to cut the shield so I just removed it. Drove for years with it removed and had no problems.

As for the OP's question: there's no problem with running without the dust shields.
I have a set of "Brake Man" brakes that required the removal of the shields and I've had no problems at all - dust or otherwise. 18,000 miles and counting.
