It was the Akebono rep that told me that the OEM (stock S2k) pad was ceramic. I have also heard the same thing that Slows2k mentioned about the AP1 pads being less dusty.
One thing, pads are pretty cheap and don't take much time to swap out, so maybe it is worth just experimenting before you try to return pads to Tire Rack.
