Topcat,
No harm done,
I couldn't figure out how to make the stock S2K computer work in my race car so I threw it all away and replaced it with an Electromotive TEC III. It controls everything on the motor, plus I understand it. The point is I set the rev limiter at 9000 and when we dyno test I tell the test guy to just run it up against the rev limiter in each gear before he shifts.
Never had a problem. Maybe it's the forged piston, forged rods, forged crank and the 100 psi, or so, of oil pressure, but this motor seems indestructible.
I've even crewed up my shifting a few times, downshifting by mistake, and momentarily running over 10,000 rpm according to the data logs. Again, no problem. And the motor is otherwise bone stock. BTW I run Mobil One 0-30 weight oil, push to the starting line, start a stone cold motor, idle for maybe 30 seconds and then hammer it wide open in all six gears for about 95 seconds.
So far, 9 runs over 200mph and not a hint of a problem. I even screwed up the cooling system once and warped the head, putting a bunch of water into the crankcase. I let it sit too long and some lobes on the cam actually rusted a little (DOOHH!). Took .008" off the head, put it back together and it still runs like a dream.
I say don't sweat it. Just keep the shiny side up. I see an awful lot of wrecked S2K's for sale.
Aall the best,
Jim

Jim, I wanted to say your posts are awesome. Not only are they filled with loads of information but they are practical and positive. They are lots of folks on the board that flaunt they credentials but have not practical skills or experience. You dont do this and always make your posts fun and informative. As for speed your right a high number are producing show cars rather than pursuing speed and power. Thats a great thing there is diversity as for me its only about speed the show will come later.
back to the topic: I have logged plenty of shifts at 9050 rpm, 9085 rpm and so on with no harm so far except for loosing a bit of traction. Based upon several posts and experience it appears the redline where fuel cuts is around 9150 rpm.

Thanks, blues,
I also get wearly from all the 25 hp air cleaner adds.
BTW I still think it would be cool for a bunch of youse guys to do an S2K rally to Speedweek next year. It's basically a huge car show. Except it has a purpose other than just showing your car. Hundreds of wonderful hot rods with mind boggling creativity everywhere.
And an overall attitude that produces racing the way it should be. Guys loaning competitors parts, even entire motors just so they can "finish". It is SOOOO COOOL.
For instance, next year I am going to let one of my pals run my car and beat my "fuel" record ("only" 221.135mph)so that he can get into the 200mph club legitimately. He's now an honorary member becasue he's been working the meet for 25 or so years, but he's never actually gotten the needed time slip.
BTW at Bonneville, "fuel" means anything you didn't buy out of the certified gas truck at the meet and then have your tank sealed prior to your run. I did my 253 "gas" record on 100 octane unleaded from the truck, and my "fuel" record on some 91 octane gas I brought along for my generator. BTW the motor wasn't running for beans at 221, so the difference had nothing to do with the octane. It'd probably run 253 on 91 octane now.
Anyway, the dates are August 13 through 20. Location, Highway 80 at the Nevada/Utah state line. City is Wendover Utah/Nevada.
And it is SCREAMING hot. So bring your sun screen.
Cooler dates but smaller meets (also faster speeds because of the lower air temps) are USAFRA meet Sept 17 through 20, and World of Speed October 12 through 16. Check scta-bni.org for details.
See you there?
All the best,
Jim

That’s what rev limiters are for! Your engine is perfectly capable of 9k rpm’s and theoretically you could hold the pedal to the floor in neutral forever and not damage the motor. I know you hear/ see videos of people bouncing off rev limiters in videos to show off their cars/ exhaust. If your motor is healthy and you have oil in it hit that rev limiter all you want!

The topic has remained relavant for 20 years and most of the comments especially the accidental (Fast and Furious) gear changes into a LOWER gear at WOT are useful. I believe the red section at the top of the tach's rpm range flashes just before the rev limiter cuts the engine off but who's got time to watch the tach in the lower gears? Remind me if the rev limiter cuts the fuel or spark -- feels like fuel but...
