I understand that most people use a hair dryer with adhesive remover.
I guess what I'm trying to ask is, why does the FAQ list a much easier method (hot water) that no one can vouch for? Why has no one tried it? And how did it make it into the FAQ if no one trusts it or has experienced it?

If you want to be the test mouse for this go ahead. AS for me, I just used the thread and some goo gone.

Well, I went ahead and tried the boiling water.
It does not work as advertised. At least not on the side S2000 emblems. The glue is just too thick -- you can put all the boiling water you want on the glue, it doesn't make it melt off. The FAQ claims that the glue comes right off, no mess/no worries, but it's simply not true.
However, rest assured your paint will remain unharmed. At least mine came through just fine.
I went ahead and dental flossed it. Once the emblem is off, I tested WD40 vs. Goof Off. Goof Off gets it off much faster -- it basically seems to liquify the glue. WD40 does ok, but requires many more passes before you're done. With the WD40, the glue only melts somewhat, and needs a non-abrasive edge (like a credit card) to scrape the glue off.
My recommendation for the easiest emblem/badge removal:
1) Get yourself a heat gun. It'll soften the glue much faster than a hair dryer.
2) Warm the badge until it's hot to the touch.
3) While it's still hot, run dental floss / fishing line under the badge until you've separated the badge from the car.
4) Put Goof Off on a soft rag, and wipe off the glue. Use plenty of clean rag area, since the glue dissolves into the rag and can smear.
5) Clean and wax the area. Yeah, the Goof Off (or WD40) will pretty much take the wax off.
Happy trails. And whoever's responsible for the FAQ: please remove the boiling water suggestion -- it doesn't work!
