Blutooth ODBII scanner

Blutooth ODBII scanner
Hi all, I've got a question if anyone can help. I've got a 2003 AP1 S.
I've been using an ELM327 ODBII bluetooth code reader for some time now. This exact type and it's smashing, but a little large, and would like something smaller to not stick down in the passenger footwell.
I've seen this type and ordered it. It plugs in and turns on fine. The phone (android) connects fine. Torque connects fine - the the ODB device. But will not connect to the car.
I've contacted the seller and had this response
"Thanks for you email us. Would you please let me know does your car can be compatible with Bluetooth V2.1? As you mentioned your old EML327, and it must be V1.5, but this one are V2.1"
I didn't think the car needed to be compatible with bluetooth, as it's the phone using the connection. The car/scanner surely should just need to be compatible with the same ODB version.
Particularly when his advert states the following
"f your car (any brand) is gasoline/petrol and it's made/imported AFTER 1 Jan, 2001 — then it's 100% OBD-2 compliant. TOAD will work!
If your car (any brand) is diesel and it's made/imported AFTER 1 Jan, 2004 — then it's 100% OBD-2 compliant. TOAD will work!
If your car is made/imported BEFORE above dates — then it's OBD1. In this case, check this ODB1 List. Do a browser phrase search to see if you can find your car. If you can, TOAD will work! If you can't, then your last remaining choice is to get AutoCOM, a highly recommended scanner that supports absolutely every OBD1/2 car on the planet."
Anyone had any dealing with these newer scanners? or any suggestions?
Thanks.

I've always used the one that you pictured first and have successfully used.
Get and obd2 extension cable like this:

It was more just a small compact out of the way thing, with an on-off switch.
I've used a 30CM extension cable and tucked my first type into the net in the passenger footwell.
May have been a bum steer - but for £8 you gotta try these things.
