Fluid and amount seems fine. It holds about 9/10 quart, and its really hard to get extra in there anyway. Thats how dealers bill stuff....round it up.

Dif fluid has a very distinct smell especially after some miles. If any is leaking out the smell will be prominant.

But the underlying cause is unknown. Sounds to me the pinion nut backed off. And that usually only happens after some type of dif repair. Not a stock undisturbed dif.

The good news is its not blown/undriveable. This way you have a better chance of them not calling abuse. This is usually always the case with the dif. But you seem to have a genuine issue.

Update from dealar. The differential sprung a leak and lost all oil.
No mechanical damage found on the diff, The tech suspects the seals blew and lost all oil.

I told him, I usually check the spots I park fror oil traces & I did not see anything.

They quote $5000 for a new diff or $2000 for a used one (74k miles).

Honda Care is yet to get back.

Keeping My fingers crossed

If the seals were blown, then I suspect an overfill. Good luck with Honda Care!

WTF on the prices?

500 for a used dif installed, while you wait.

I'm not saying your diff is ok but this oil did not damage it.

The OEM spec is a single weight SAE 90 and NOT 75W-90 btw.
A long story short: the since 1999 OEM recommended SAE 90 was way thicker then the present day 75W-90 oils.
Using a thicker 75W-140 is ok.
I always thought this was the OEM fluid Honda recommended, it's what's in my diff at the moment.

that will work fine. I believe that is the closest thing honda sells that will work - sold through there powersports dealers.

5000 for a diff lol, wow would hate to see a quote for engine.
