Hi Guys - I need some advice please...

I own a 2008 S2000, 30k, full Honda service history - no previous faults on vehicle - immaculate condition - never used on a track

I recently took the car to my local Honda dealer and had a gold service performed (with no faults found)- to cut a long story short one month later my big end bearings have completely disintegrated causing significant damage.

The car is currently with an independent garage who have advised that the only way this kind of damage could have occurred is if the engine was used without oil, or was starved of oil. With my limited knowledge of S2000 failures/trends I have to admit I am wondering if the service was performed correctly?

I have contacted Honda UK who are investigating with the local Honda dealer who conducted the service, however I need to get an independent assessment as to the cause of the failure by a professional

Can anyone recommend an engine specialist/Engineer who is qualified to write a report that would stand up in court if required preferably in the northwest (UK)?

Not another "Honda should have pulled my pan when I had it serviced" thread. I'm not sure what a Gold Service includes but I doubt pulling the pan is part of it. Sounds like your SOL.

Thanks for the replies. I drove approx. 400-450 miles after the service - just commuting to and from work.

As for the 'Not another "Honda should have pulled my pan when I had it serviced" thread. I'm not sure what a Gold Service includes but I doubt pulling the pan is part of it. Sounds like your SOL. '

Don't know what a pan is...Don't know what a SOL is either?

Gold service is the major service interval as I understand it.

Any thoughts?

Pulliong the pan is pulling the oil pan to inspect the motor and SOL is shit out of luck...

Some gold service. What the guys mean is Honda dealers are destroying this car all over the world.

Here is your course of action:

What is the oil level showing on the stick? Are there any leaks at all by the filter or the drain plug?

Post Honda service - no leaks were externally evident. Upon hearing a mechanical noise from the engine I immediately (within 1 hr) took it back to the Honda dealer who gave it a quick once over (this involved trying to identify where the mechanical noise was emanating from and they also checked the level of oil in the engine: oil level was full!! - no visual check was conducted by the filter or drain plug).

Honda then recommended that a diagnostic was required - this was performed: the out-turn report stated that the mechanical noise was coming from the transmission and they recommended I go to a transmission specialist.

Transmission specialist dropped the gearbox - no fault found - fly wheel ok. They (Transmission specialist)then brought in a engine specialist who said it was the big ends. They removed the sump and..yup - big end totally fecked

Basically:

- pre service: car performing well, no faults or early indications of possible damage
- service: no indication from Honda dealer of any engine noise, metallic particles in oil, or oil filter or low oil. They did manage to identify tyre wear through......
post service- Armageddon

I just cannot believe in this coincidence???

The engine is still in pieces so I can get a specialist to review damage.

Has any one heard of damage to an engine through application of incorrect oil (as in viscosity)?
