Blowing OEM shocks with extra weight?
Hi,
I recently put '07 AP2 shocks on about 2-3 weeks ago. I got them from another S2KI member with only 2.5k miles on them. My right rear shock blew on my <50k AP1 shocks. I'm lowered 1" on Swift Springs.
A week or so ago I let my cousin ride in my car with a girl on his lap, just to drop her off at her car. We drove maybe 0.2 miles, slowly, through a mall parking lot. Our combined weight was 185 + 215 + 140-150~ish. The S2000 is rated for 400 lbs, so we were about 150 lbs over.
Since then, my right rear shock has felt funny, and I can't say for certain whether or not it's bad until tomorrow when my friend and I test it.
Question is, could that much extra weight cause my right side/right rear shock(s) to blow, even though it was such a short distance and with no high intensity load placed on them?

That is not going to cause the shock to blow. Maybe shocks were older than what you were told and had more mileage, but again that weight should not hurt the shock.

it is know that lower spring causes stock shocks to blow.

Do you ever drive the car "hard"?? Going over one funny shaped bump or slope or whatever at high speeds with lowered springs may be enough to blow a shock, even with only 1'' lowered. I have blown a shock at 60k in a stock s2000 driving fast through bumpy twisty roads. However, now at 115k, the two front shocks which were never replaced still work okay. What you are experiencing is probably a shock that was already blown or excessively worn.
