Actually, that's not really very important. 12000 RPM is 200 revs per second. Even if you get your foot back on the clutch almost immediately, the damage is done.

I mis-shifted one time while I was in 4th into 3rd instead of 5th, going around 60-70 mph, below v-tec rpm's. As soon as I felt it the rpm skyrocket and heard the engine noise, I clutched in and put it back to 4th. Would that scenario have caused any engine damage, if so how can you tell? If when the engine blows, what kind of noises do you hear, and does the engine then just shut down on its own?

ok here are the results :
first and 4th cylinder doesnt have any compression ( after compression test )
2nd has 120
3rd has 50
avarage is 150-175
they havent have the head off yet , so we still dont know what is going on in there , but they dont expect anything bad i guess , they ll change 6 intake , 6 exhaust valve
estimated number is $2200 , it might get to 3000 too depends how quality work i want
parts 900
labor 1300

i blew up my motor, but did it with a 100 shot. i was on the highway doing a 2nd-4th gear run with a buddy's type s bc he wanted to see how bad he'd get beat. once i was 15-18 cars ahead of him by the end of 4th i put it in 6th. opposed to the sound of my exhaust being a nice, constant tone...it was burbly and sounded muffled. i pulled over and looked at my motor (it was still running) and it shook back and forth like an old 91 1.8 liter volvo motor.
i knew something was horribly wrong so i got it towed to my mechanic. he took the head apart and found i had bent 10 valves. i had it machined/resurfaced. i had those 10 valves replaced as well as all new gaskets. once the head was re-installed, they noticed a knock coming from the front of the block. so we then realized i had a problem in the short block as well. he dropped the oil pan and took a look at the rod bearings but that wasn't the problem. he is now thinking it may be a main bearing or a piston. my car is still in the shop and has been since July 5th. i just sold my turbo kit to help pay for my motor rebuild.
