Yep engine oil differences are PII. “Preoccupation with Inconsequential Increments” (term courtesy LtCol Jeff Cooper)

I saw the report today. https://gallery.mailchimp.com/f64139...Aug_17_ENG.pdf
Maybe this will put an end to the otherwise endless "which oil should I use" threads?

Nothing will change. So you got a bad uoa, does that mean you will tear down the engine or continue to run it until it goes pop?

Last example was the Mustang owner who chased down bad timing chain guides when aluminum began to skyrocket.

That was some Sherlock level shit. I lost a Daytona 675 motor to the same thing during a trackday.

The Army abandoned mileage/time based oil changes decades ago and went to oil analysis. At least with expensive, critical engines such as those in tanks and aircraft. We'd pull the sample, send it in, and routinely get a message to change the oil but occasionally get a priority message to change the engine (!) and fit a spare. Luckily tank and helicopter engines are pretty simple to change.

I like to do a yearly UOA to see how things are trending, that's it. Much like a yearly dyno test in Japan where they use it to track trends.

On my original S2000 ap1 motor I got a bad UOA report just before the motor expired with high copper and lead readings. A couple months later the motor puked the main bearings for no known reason. It was good info looking back but I could not do anything to prevent the eventual failure.

They're using the data they have, not running tests. If you have a track car get an analysis and compare your results.
