Billman’s P1457 DIY

Hey Bill, long time and yes, thread revival. Thanks for always taking the time to help the enthusiasts out.
Do that combination of circumstances point you to a particular part I should replace? I've been reading all related threads and they seem to point me at a multitude of valves and vents near the canister.
Was just wondering if you could diagnose with some more details listed.
Thanks in advance,
Jeremy
Hey Bill, long time and yes, thread revival. Thanks for always taking the time to help the enthusiasts out.
- I have had a strong gas smell for a while now...especially after a long highway drive or super hot weather...
- I could swear I heard a sloshing sound of liquid coming from the rear the other day...
- I'm getting a code P0497
- I had an FIPK AEM intake for a few years and recently reverted to OEM intake and all the associated vacuum lines (might not have had an effect but figured I'd mention).

I read and read and read but damn it seems like it can be so many things...I guess really next step is get the car in the air, I just don't want to throw parts at it if you fellas could narrow it down. I definitely appreciate any guidance.

In addition, I cleared codes and this one now had popped up instead:
P1457
Again, on hot days or after highway driving I def smell unburnt fuel and not from the fuel cap (which I changed in the past). I could swear I heard liquid sloshing around the other day. I wonder if the purge is clogged or malfunctioning and the vapors are staying trapped and turning back into liquid INTO the evap canister. Fuel consumption seems about right...200 to 240 to a tank depending on how much highway and keeping it under 4K for normal around town driving.

a 1457 is a leak in the evap canister area code, in my experience it is usually fixed with a evap canister and vent shut valve.

Thanks man...so new evap canister and vent shut valve will be it then...that makes sense because that would explain the smell of fresh fuel after drive a lot or it being hot out as the liquid expands and turns to a fume.

Since they are so costly, what's everyone's thoughts on buying a lower mileage entire set of valves and canister off ebay?
I guess there's no telling if they are good until you bolt them in...but at the cheap cost of them on ebay it'll give you a whole other set of everything for troubleshooting...
I notice the 2000-2005 are one part number but it's different for 2007...was there an updated set of parts for this and will they bolt right up and connect right to the harness?
Maybe the newer years didn't have the same flaws that caused the codes for us?

Well, I decided to go for it and buy a lower mileage unrusty complete assembly from a wrecked S2000 on ebay...
I figured it'll give me 2 of everything for troubleshooting purposes...plus, I can check the valves functioning while off the
car before installing it.

Oddly enough, the CEL disappeared...
I was under the car doing the diff fluid last night and with no key in the ignition, about every minute or so I would hear something electronic opening or closing...sounded like an actuator or something coming from the EVAP canister area...
any ideas? It's obviously not a sensor but probably is the vent valve? I guess that would make sense if it's opening and letting out fumes when it shouldn't.
Does that make sense?

No one has any ideas that's all. Could be the NSA monitoring your activities.
