I think he is referring to disconnecting the battery so that if there is an electrical short of some kind, your car won't go up in flames/the short won't cause more damage than it already has. Has anything electronic been installed recently? It is rare for our wiring to spontaneously go bad without some outside help, our cars aren't quite old enough for the stock insulation to be rotting away, so there's a good possibility that there is a mechanical cause to this. If you don't have someone local to take a look at it for you, bring it to a shop. (on a tow truck of course)

Yeah man, thatd do it. If there was a fault in the system, a bigger fuse just takes the circuit protection away. Check your melted wire insulation and charred parts around the circuit that you messed with.

The smoke was from the dash harness you just melted from the 30A fuse in a 10 amp circuit that has a short.

You replaced a fuse with one rated for 3 times the amps!?!?! Why? It's 10a for a reason. I would guess you are lucky to still have a car (instead of a pile of ashes).
This reminds me of my best friend's truck in high school (a late 60's ford). It kept blowing buss fuses, so he replaced them with spent .22 shells. Perfect fit!
