Better way to close the hood?

Showing the engine off to co-workers (it was THEIR idea to see the engine compartment) once, I dropped it about three times and it wouldn't latch. Each time from a progressively higher height.
I was getting desperate and (knowing the hood is aluminum, and knowing that everyone says NOT to do it) carefully tried pushing down on it (both hands, fingers spread as wide as possible to spread out the force) and felt it give -- a LOT.
I am not a big strong guy, but I bet I could fold that hood over a couple times.
I am dropping it from at LEAST 2' and it still sometimes takes a second try.
It feels awful, but the good solid WHUMP when it locks is VERY satisfying.
