By the second fill up at the gas station I usually have to put in half a quart of oil, sometimes more.
Half a quart every 5-600 miles is right at the edge of, but still within, what Honda defines as acceptable (1 qt per 1000 miles) consumption.

I personally wouldn't downgrade from synth to dino. Even if you end up burning less oil with dino, it doesn't mean you're getting better protection. Mobil 1 EP is a great oil and probably better for your engine than any dino oil.

Although it's not usually available over the counter, I'd recommend Amsoil. A bit pricey, but there's little dispute that it's a great oil. I switched from dino to Amsoil and my consumption has dropped in half.

[QUOTE=JFUSION,Jan 8 2010, 07:03 AM] I second the Amsoil recommendation, you can get it over the counter in some places, I buy it by the case and it is cheaper that way.

Hi, here is the contact site for Pablo, I believe he has a link on there to email him. He is exceptionally knowledgeable in his products and motor oil issues in general, if you don't mind ordering he is a great source of info and products.

Same here though Blackstone suggested trying an 8,000 mile OCI.

I just order online, paying their annual fee for the discount. Shipping is typically 1 day for me but it probably depends on how close you are to the distributor that fulfills your order.
well yeah I am sure 8,000 miles is perfectly fine as a starting point. They can definitely run this oil longer than that.

One of the best used oil analysis I seen was on an S2000, the guy ran Amsoil 0w-30 for 37,000 miles, it showed virtually no wear metals, quite impressive. I just couldn't do that myself but big props to those who know what they are doing. He did the Amsoil filter changes, had a prelube system of some sorts, and added about 5 quarts of top up oil over 37,000 miles, still pretty darn good.

From my readings ap1's burn more oil as they 1. age 2. vtec.

My Honda tech friend informs me on s2000's 1qt per 1000 miles is typical of higher mileage S's. The prelude similarly suffers this fate.

The oil you're using is what I've used on my TLl and now on my ap2. Though I've not burned any on either.

I use a K&N or Mobil 1 figure (when on special) with my oil.

I hear good things about castrol, nothing stopping you from trying.

I run the factory Honda filter, I personally shy away from aftermarket oil filters as you never know how they will affect the oil pressure within your engine. At least with the Honda filter you know their design provides the right oil pressure. You might get the same effect with some aftermarket filters but you just don't really know. I have this opinion for all vehicle manufacturers whose cars I drive - Ford, Dodge and Honda.
