Best Motor Oil to Stop Oil Consumption
My car is over the 100k mark and currently using Mobile 1 full synthetic extended performance. Car is burning too much oil and would like to know which motor oil will help prevent oil consumption for the best price. I've heard good stuff about castrol gtx but was wondering if it would be ok to go back to non-synthetic and what about castrol edge or pennzoil or even possibly valvoline? People with experience or suggestions please help, thanks.

By the second fill up at the gas station I usually have to put in half a quart of oil, sometimes more. I would like to try something else that I can easily get over the counter other than Mobile 1.

Try Amsoil or Redline. Redline worked for me. You probably won't find either at Autozone, but if you look around you'll find them. I can get one locally at Fleet Farm and another at a crusty import parts place.
You can go back to non synthetic if you want.

I too have tried 'mobil1' and my car had the same mileage on as your car plus its an AP1, i had the same problem as you regarding consumption.
I found after trying several including 'motul' (French shit), 'Mobil1', 'Shell' etc, Castrol edge (British ) was the best.
In fact probably 90% of us UK side use Castrol as we have found it the best.

I second the Amsoil recommendation, you can get it over the counter in some places, I buy it by the case and it is cheaper that way. I don't take it anywhere near 25,000 miles, I will run it about 5,000 to 7,000 miles on average, though it can go longer. They have a 100% synthetic line, and an XL line (cheaper and for shorter drains group 3).
Other things to try is a new pcv valve if you haven't changed yours in a while, every 2 years is good IMO (cheap maintenance).
Consider running a product to clean up deposits that you may have on your piston rings. Auto-rx, Seafoam, Marvel Mystery Oil, Lucas Upper Cylinder lubricant, Riselone, are some examples of products that do gentle cleaning of the engine and they can get your rings to seal up better if they have deposits on them.
Amsoil will keep your rings clean once you begin using it, as will Redline and other top grade oils.
You other choice would be to run a high-mileage oil that is readily available over the counter - Castrol, Mobil, Penzoil, Valvoline all have a version of this oil. They work really well at cleaning the engine and treating the seals, and they are pretty affordable.
