a small gain is better than a loss.

There is more to an AEM or Comptech intake than just a filter and some tubing. There is a lot of R&D that gets done to match resonator pulses with engine timing, or designing to help assist a swirling effect as the air rushes into the cylinder, and other such things.

In other words, this is very much a case of "you get what you pay for".
Yes you get what you pay for...but as far as swirling effect...no, this is not that Turbonator here

There is an effect with intake resonance though. In the V1, around 3000-3200rpm and 6000-6200rpm and PROBABLY 9000-9200 rpm there are "torque spikes" where the resonance frequencies are at a maximum amplitude enabling more air into the cylinders creating a little more torque...not REALLY noticable when driving around, but they can be seen when looking at load dynos like dynapacks. They don't match up with engine timing or anything like that though...they really are just tubes...its just that these spikes 3000 obviously helps with puttering around town, and 6000 increases the VTEC kick (although my VTEC is now at 5400) but yes the resonances have been studied to match "weak points" in the powerband, or enhance characteristics of the powerband

I have seen those torque spikes on many dynos...I espically remember seeing the spike that AEM CAI's give in the mid range.

I'll probably buy an intake...but I still may build myself something.

heres some pics from my previous cars turbo "intake"

My friends dad is a very good fabricator and welder...I helped with designing where and how the pipes ran, and he welded.

Not the best pics of just the intake, but they work.

with that work, I would seriously consider building your own...look at the AEM/Injen/Comptech/PRM/J's/Mugen etc see what they did, then make your intake a combination of the best components of all of them...if you do, and dyno a before and after. I may want to buy one I heat wrapped my AEM anyway so...

And if the gains were good, I'd let you borrow my AEM to do a before/after dyno comparing the two and see if you can gain more power.

I did think about an expansion chamber for the AEM...would probably do something good if J's does it...

Thanks for the support. I just wanted to show with the pics that if I do build my own intake, it isn't going to be half assed.

no it wouldn't...and I'm serious that if it was better then my AEM, I'd want one! And I DO see room for improvement in the AEM, it would also be nice to make the filter the low point in the system...that way hydrolock is no longer ANY problem, UNLESS you drive through a puddle like an idiot.

If you have the time/funds, go for it

Do some calculations and take the guess work out of it! Search for helmholtz equations.

This is very true.

The thing is people are paying $300 plus for the AEM, or PRM, or Comptech with little to no gains....

Then if you want to step up you are looking at $1000+ for Something like the J's racing intake, or Mugen, $2000 for the Gruppe M. And IMO no intake is worth that kind of money.
The reason why the AEM is so much is because they had to go through with carb eo bull****. there are a lot of no name intakes that looks exactly like the aem but a lot cheaper. And those intakes are technically illegal because they don't have the carb stamp on it. basically you are paying for the carb stamp.

If I lost my carb stamp...how do I get it back?
