Thanks for the specs. The brace is also placed so the weakest "side" is the one facing down, given the orientation of the C or sides. Imagine if it were a bridge, it would be able to support more weight with the sides underneath than above. The metal sides can collapse against itself (as it did) but to fail the other way involves shearing forces on the metal; much higher.
