Default Belt whine under load

I am looking for some advice after watching numerous videos and reading a few threads regarding "belt whine".

Symptoms:
  • Belt whine when under load (moving in gear)
  • Whine gets progressively louder and higher pitched as RPMs raise
  • Whine does not occur at idle
  • Whine does not occur at idle while in gear w/ clutch in
  • Whine does not occur unless the car is under a load, in gear, and moving
Video of pulleys while idle

Video of pulley tensioner inspections

There is some clear wobble on both the idler pulley and the tensioner pulley. Would this cause the whine I am hearing? Any suggestions to test and/or eliminate some causes?

Thanks in advance,
Matt

May be time to purchase a new idler and/or tensioner pulley. I'm assuming you've exonerated the belt itself? Where is the tensioner arrow pointing on the tensioner housing? (i.e. is it time for belt replacement?)

99SH,

Indeed. The belt "shouldn't" be the direct culprit although I recently replaced it which may have put the last needed strain on the pulleys you're referring too and, ultimately, caused the whine. I am trying to get some clarification on what noises occur when each of the pulleys begin to degrade because of all the posts I've read only 1 or 2 mentioned "a whine sound".

I bought new bearings and will replace them this weekend. For a cost of 21 bucks I figured I would just start there. Based on what I've gathered from this post, it should be fairly straightforward.

Thanks,
Matt

Have you done anything to your timing chain tensioner?

I have the v3 (i think) Billman's version and installed it a few months ago. I read a thread regarding installing it improperly, which may cause the whine; if that's why you're asking. What are you thinking?

Wanted to give everyone a heads up; replacing both, the idler pulley and tensioner pulley bearings with these, fixed the whine. Enjoy your weekend.
