lol and old bump. Yeah I ended up replacing the whole wire bc the corrosion traveled inside the wrapping and was eating up the cable.

I did not go with an optima since I read many problems with quality as of late, and was urged not to purchase a yellow top by several reviews online, as well as employees at advance auto parts.

Another option besides Vaseline, is clear paint. I have been doing this for years. Get them nice and clean using whatever method you like, then spray paint them with clear paint. You need to mask off the area, and you don't need to spray it like a pro, you just need to cover all the metal at the terminals. This has been the least messy way to protect them that I have found. Vaseline is fine, but I have had it get really nasty and goo up an otherwise easy battery change.
This is a bad idea. Paint is not conductive. There are products available to remove/prevent corrosion that will not be detrimental to the hardest working part of your electical system.
