A 1/2 drive breaker bar will work fine to loosen the axle nut, just use a cheater bar. I use the handle to my floor jack. A chair leg will work as well.

You won't see any movement of the ball joint when using the puller. The puller will get tight like your tightening a bolt, then qiuckly pop.
