Default from bad to WORSE - The verdict is in.. the winner is ?!

Hi guys,

some of you saw my previous post on this a day ago. Well now the noise is so loud I cant drive the car. Its horrible... I put the rear end on jack stands and made this video. It doesn't sound like the diff, I put my damn ear to it and it seems to be coming from somewhere else..

im freakin out...my S is my only car right now and without it im totally f@#ked!

its MUCH louder in person

Bad axles.

Billman wins 1st prize once again. Jose ( jlozano180 ) is here now. I am gonna record this chatterbox of metal and post it soon..put your ear up to the axle with the tire off and the wheels spinning...... sounds like a metal grinder..

with the rear end jacked up, I put the car in neutral and spun the rear wheels. I had a neighbor hold the passengers wheel still while I spun the drivers side and I can hear the knocking, very faint though because I can only spin the wheel so fast. On the opposite side I can hear something, but not as audible as the drivers side. Its a knocking that seems to hit as the wheel rotates around on one 360 degree turn... not all the time.

I checked the wheels for any play and they are tight so I don't see it being a bearings...

ill drain the fluid tomorrow... but id be shocked if it was the diff I use Mobil 1, never dump the clutch and baby the car most of the time. What will I see when I drop the fluid, metal pieces?? when I changed the fluid last time there was the typical metal gunk on the drain bolt but nothing severe...

If its the diff, I get a used one..or whatever it is ill just order the part. my problem is I don't know enough to properly diagnose it ... don't want to buy a diff and then it turns out to be a bad CV or axle...

I'm still betting on a CV related issue. Especially if you don't beat on your diff and/or have never had warning signs in the past of a failing diff.

The reason I say I believe it is your diff is because the the CV joints will not make noise unless they are bearing a load (aka on the ground and moving). You said you held the pass side wheel while spinning the driver side and it made noise. Then you said you did the same for the other and heard the noise still. Are you sure its coming from the rear end? I have heard of the inner CV joints wearing out quick on the S though. Can you describe the noise?
