Default Bad Throwout Bearing?

Today I was driving on the highway, pulled off the exit, stopped and couldn't get my car into first. I pumped the clutch a few times and I was able to get it in but it made a winding/whining noise after I pushed it in. It went away and came back when I started moving, and disappeared after I was off the clutch completely. The noise comes back as I shift through each gear.

Is this the throwout bearing?

How should I go about replacing? What should I replace at the same time?

2001, 104,000 miles.

Thanks,

It sounds like your throwout, or release bearing, but from the way you described how you had to pump the clutch to get it into gear, you may have a problem with your clutch hydraulics as well.

To replace the T/O bearing, you have to drop the tranny. Now would also be a good time to put a new clutch in while you have it opened up. How long has it been since your car had its clutch replaced?

Is there like a DIY for dropping the tranny? I'm kindof afraid to move my car. Is there any suggested way to get this fixed (preferably for cheap?).

It might be the TB but as I reacall you can usually feel and hear a bad bearing when your foot is on or off the clutch. Get a mechs opinion first.
If it is just a bad TB, replace it along with all clutch componets.

So is there a cheaper way to get this done than bringing it to a garage? I'm willing to do it myself but I have no idea how. What would I need tools/equipment-wise?

Thanks,

Check the DIY sticky for the clutch replacement. Most replace the clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing all at once since it is a bit of work to pull the tranny.

If you don't feel comfortable tackling the job after reading the DIY, then post in your regional s2ki forum for a shop recommendation.

Expect $800-1000 for parts + labor.

BTW...you should check your clutch hydraulic fluid...that might be why the car was difficult to get into gear. And it just so happens that your throw out bearing is starting to whine as well. You can drive for a bit with a whiney throw out bearing...annoying, but will give you the time to save money for the clutch job.

Fluid looks good. I may just go for it in my garage. It'll take me at least a weekend, but that's no big deal. I can probably put together the cash for a shop, but it's more fun this way.

Any suggestions for a clutch kit and where to buy? Is OEM the way to go? The car is stock and I won't be driving it too hard.

Thanks for all your help,
