Default Bad Output Shaft Bearings?

Hi guys, I need some help and need a few questions answered. I have done tons of research already.

I am having problems and I think it may be the output shaft bearings, BUT this is just pure speculation and based on no evidence at this time. The problem started as everyone else states, first there is a small whining sound whenever driving the car. I would only really notice the whining when in neutral and coming to a stop. As long as the car moved, there was a whining noise, even when the car is out of gear and coming to a stop in neutral, there was always a little whining. I never thought much of it because it was barely even noticeable. Only when I was driving with my girlfriend and we had the radio on low would I ever hear the noise.

I never thought much of it, until New Year’s night, the 1st of January, when I was driving back home. Suddenly there was a loud whining noise, much louder than the normal whining I heard before. On top of that, I felt like throwing up on the drive home because of a really bad smell inside the cabin. It smells like transmission oil, though I am not sure if transmission oil has its own unique smell. I performed a check on YouTube and on here, s2ki.com and BAM! I found a possible answer; the bearings on the secondary output shaft may be the culprit.

Now I need help isolating what the problem is, rather than just taking a wild guess. I have seen other threads where they have similar symptoms, but the problem turns out to be a CV axle instead. Such as this one: https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/110...#entry23458748

Then there is this guy on YouTube who found out the problem was his prop shaft:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtXKal1jY7w

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know what I can do. I have read many of the threads, but most of the threads that I have seen are from guys who removed the back half of the gear box and checked the bearings without providing any troubleshooting steps.
https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/814...shaft-removal/
https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/409...whining-noise/

The noise I am talking about sounds exactly like this clip:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1YMcmJGNxc

I will upload my clip of my car later and also post it here. According to the video above, the poster (Jason Park) stated that it was his “transmission output shaft bearing (On the transmission side where transmission and the driveshaft connect).” I am sort of betting that is my issue also.

Also, when lifting up the rear end as in the thread: https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/109...+shaft+bearing
If I want to view and identify where the noise is coming from, it is best to just lift the rear end with the wheels removed right?

Thanks guys.

" On top of that, I felt like throwing up on the drive home because of a really bad smell inside the cabin. "

I'd prolly get a good look under the car and see if any seals are leaking. Really, inspect all drivetrain seals back to the wheels. Remove the tranny and diff fill hole bolts and check the fluid levels, with car raised in flat horizontal position --- like on 4 jack stands.

A leaky seal and low fluid level could = damaged bearing. If you get around to changing fluids --- check for excessive metal in the lube. And on magnetic plugs.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I will get to that today. I guess I might as well do an tranny and diff oil change you think?

Also, would someone be kind enough to post the service manual online if possible so that I know what I will be getting into. I have read that the repair can be a DIY project. The only thing that might need to be sent to the shop is the push/pulling of the bearings, but taking it apart should save some money...at least that is what I have read through the threads that I have come across. Thanks in advance!

Update!

I decided to fix the problem myself. I am having a shop press and pull the secondary shaft for $70. Some shops here are straight BS. They wanted $1,000 plus parts to do it, even after I showed theme all these threads here on s2ki. I have removed the rear housing, pretty simple and easy. I encourage anyone with this problem to do it themselves if they have the time. It is basically nuts and bolts. I am following the service manual, which I downloaded online and another thread here online:

https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/107...-diy-included/

I am following the steps that I need in the thread above. Little bits of info that are not included in the service manual. The biggest issue so far is that I have run into two unexpected issues.

1. The driveshaft 6 mm Hex bolts are really tricky to remove. I had to dremel a custom hex bolt/socket because all the hex bolts sold in stores are too long an hit the driveshaft/prop shaft.

2. I have also found a new bearing that is bad. The bearing fell out and is loose in the pocket that it sits in. It isn't a ball bearing, but a roller. I need to confirm part number for it. I think it is 91104-PCY-003 [BEARING, NEEDLE (30X64X20)] #18 Please confirm this for me so I can place the order.

The read arrow is the bad bearing/roller. It fell out and sits lower than the rest.

This photo is not mine, I am using it as an example to show the bearing I need to replace.

Here is a video in the case that anyone needs more info as to why I am replace this bearing too.
http://youtu.be/r_zjDOAmwK4

Please let me know if I have the correct part number listed.

Thanks.

Refer to my thread here for new info if needed: https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/111...#entry23522856

Leaving this here so that someone else can find this info one day if needed. I know it helped me A LOT by searching for info in these threads. I am leaving this here to pay it forward for anyone else that may find this info helpful.
