bad main bearings sound different than bad rod bearings. With bad main bearings the motor takes on a different sound and has some increased vibrations. Oil light on at idle is consistent with bad main bearings. Bad rod bearings have a very distinctive knock.

I would definitely drop the oil pan, I am pretty sure you will find the answer in there. I'm surprised you didn't find any metal shavings in the vtec solenoid screen ?, they can end up there sometimes.
