I know people may not agree or they might but i have been using royal purple and i love there oil!! My s2000 has farely low mileage 29k but i havent heard any noise from the engine bay to lead me to say that the chain tensioner is going bad. The chain tensioner problem is that a problem with every year s2000 or is it a specific set of years that go bad>??????/

yeah I don't believe it's related to the brand of oil you run as people using all types of il have had the same isues. I think Mobil1 is unfairly blamed for a lot of things without any real proof.

ive been using mobil1 10w-30 fully synthetic for 46k miles in 4 years and never had a problem with TCT. knock on wood. car currently has 56k miles and still no sound

My TCT gets noisy when Oil pressure gets low. Put a quart in and it goes away. As most of us know, the S burns oil. I'm assuming because it's so high revving? Either way, every friend I have that owns one has to put at least a quart in between oil changes. I still use Mobile 1 fully synthetic 10w30 and have had no problems when Oil is at normal level.

The reason you're putting a quart in between oil changes, is because of M1. I've used it, and it was being 'drunk' up by the engine like whoa. It killed my TCT in 3k miles. So now I got a new TCT, and using AMsoil 10W30, EX version.

With Amsoil, my car went through rigorous Dyno tuning sesion, without barely using up any Amsoil!

Amsoil FTW!!!

Oil pressure doesn't drop as a function of level until the pump starts sucking air. At that point you're WAY beyond 1 quart low (or you're upside down).

As for the myth of M1 being volatile, there may be some truth in that but 1) I've used it since the late '70s with no problems/excessive usage on a wide variety of vehicles and 2) using a different oil in my S has resulted in exactly the same usage (about a quart per 1k miles). There may be specific circumstances that cause an issue but it's not the norm.

Sorry, but the TCT issues aren't M1 issues...

I agree 100%

A noisy TCT is only a side effect of using Mobil1.

Any GOOD oil will have a NEGATIVE effect on the TCT. After all, it relies on friction to keep it's tension.

So use crap oil and your TCT will be fine.

Or sandblast the worm gear and fix it the right way

Our cars, specifically AP1s, use up more M1 than any other oil of similar viscosity rating. It's all over forums, just do a search, don't take my word for it.

Take the TCT out.
Take it apart.
Take the wormgear to a local shop that has a sandblaster (prolly a bodyshop that uses sandblasting to remove old paint and contaminants).
Take a break while they sandblast it (to rough it up).
