I have a 2002 s2k. The car is stock and has about 70K miles. About 6 K miles ago i changed the chain tensioner because it was very loud at idel. Sounded like noisy valvetrain. Now 6K miles later the sound is slowly coming back. If i change the oil it will go afay for maybe 1k miles then it will come back. I only run mobile 1 and i know the chain tensioner runs on oil pressure. Please help. Should i just go buy anotehr chain tensioner and hope for the best. Did i get a bad chain tensioner ? I never run the car low on oil btw.

Mobil 1 seems to be a consistent contributor to noisy tensioners.

many cases on here of the replacement tensioners failing very quickly after installation as compared to the original factory tensioners. Personally I think they are just poorly designed and manufactured parts, almost deserve a recall IMO, and for the price Honda charges you this is a disgrace as they rarely offer you warranty coverage on them.

Just as an easy experiment try running a good 5w40 weight oil, or if you don't want a 40 weight then try Castrol Syntec 0w30 (German made) and see if the noise goes away. The 5w40 provides extra oil pressure, and Castrol's 0w30 is a high 30 weight almost approaching a 40 weight which will also boost pressure a tad. I run Amsoil 5w40 in my engine and the tensioner is perfectly quiet, I'm on my first replacement tensioner as the factory one died on the previous owner at about 45,000 miles (he ran Castrol 10w30 oil), the car currently has 55k on it.

i guess i'll try changing oil. But when i do change old the sound does go away for maybe 1,000 miles but it will slowly get worst as the millage adds on. As of not its not close to as bad as it was before when it was on the origional tensioner but i can tell it will get to that level soon.

I changed TCT 6k miles ago and the noise is coming back... I'm using Shell 5W-40 oil, changed ~1k miles ago. Today I found my old TCT and sanded worm gear... will try to replace it.

Just another data point - I replaced my TCT a few times and always had the sound come back. Turned out it WASN'T the TCT - the top bolt of the bell housing had backed out and was rattling around, hitting the firewall. The clutch had been replaced for the clutch buzz problem and the dealer hadn't tightened the top bolt properly.

I use Mobil 1 also and haven't had any of the problems folks like to blame it for. Even tried switching oils and found no difference in consumption, noise, etc. YMMV

yeah I don't believe it's related to the brand of oil you run as people using all types of il have had the same isues. I think Mobil1 is unfairly blamed for a lot of things without any real proof.

Last car I dealt with that had a noisy tensioner had just been put on Mobil 1. Changed the oil, noise went away. This was a very low mile AP2, under 4K miles.

Get rid of Mobil 1. Lots of issues with it with AP1s. AP2s are better, though, on consumption of Mobil1. But TCTs still get smoked by that oil.
