B16a1 problems
I'm trying to get my crx ready to sell and everything goes wrong. I had the transmission replaced but when I got it back the check engine light was on and the rev limiter was cutting out at about 7200 rpm. I checked the code and it's telling me that my vtec pressure switch is bad. I also have a Field's vtec controller, so I checked all of the connections but everything seems right. The problem is that I don't know where the vtec pressure switch is located. Does anyone have any advice? I even disconnected the vtec controller and still have the same problem so I'm assuming the mechanic screwed up the switch. BTW it's a 91 CRX Si with a b16a1 motor and a pr3 computer. thanx

7200 rpm is the fuel shut off point for the Stock ECU. If he wired the chip in as a piggy back, he may have messed up. This definitely sounds like an electrical problem. If you were using the stock timing or fuel map you'd get a check engine light pretty damn quick. It sounds like you are running with the stock ECU right now. The VTEC solonoid is physically located on the side of the engine head opposite the timing belt.

I already disconnected the whole vtec controller and still the same problem. Believe me, I'll never go back to that shop again. My vtec worked fine before that and would redline somewhere over 8000 rpm (I never took it over that) They also said that it was faulty wiring on the vtec controller, but it worked fine before I brought it in I can't sit there and argue with them because I need to sell the car soon to be able to make my S2000 payment. I'll be checking all of the connecters on the distributor side later tonight.........FRUSTRATED.

The fields VTEC controller has a setting to change the redline. Are you sure the redline setting is set to 8200rpm. B16A engines do redline at 8200rpm. For some reason the Civic Si Coupe only redlines at 8000rpm compared to my old Del Sol VTEC.
It sounds like they goofed up the wiring or changed the redline setting.

The Vtec pressure switch is located right next to the spool valve for the vtec, which is right in front of the distributor. It is the one that goes into the vtec valve housing.
Jerry, he said he is using the PR3 ecu, which is the stock one for that engine, and doesn't cut fuel that early.
I ran my b16 crx to 8200 on a daily basis, and at the track about a hundred runs a year with the PR3 ecu. What a riot of a car to drive especially for about $4500.
