The method shown in this video has always worked for me. Be sure to thread the nut on to cover the top to protect the threads.

No idea... it makes sense and it looks easy but I just couldn't get mine to break loose. I hit it pretty hard with a hammer a number of times. No dice.

Check out KD set number 41690. It's reasonably priced and you'll never need to rent from pepboys again. I find the hammer method annoying- it works well on semi's/big trucks where you have lots of room to swing a sledge, but on a car you're often not so lucky. There's also always the potential to miss. Use the balljoint tool shown above and you'll never look back.
Make sure to grease the cup to avoid damaging the boots on the joints. When it pops it'll scare you the first time.
