Hope I can still get an answer on this

I have this ticking or rattling noise that comes somewhere from rear left wheel/rear end. It can be audible if you push the car back and forward in neutral (light cyclic sound) or even a bit louder if your stoping on a traffic light...

Do you think it could be related to axle nuts even considering this rattle happens rolling the car in neutral?

Thanks

I could not understand why greasing the axle spline and re-torquing the nut would fix the noise but I did it 3 times (about every 10 - 12 months) because the TSB said that was the fix.

When I finally realized that this was caused by the wheel bearings going bad, the inboard bearings were so bad that they had wobbled enough to fret the hubs. I ended up having to replace both hubs and bearings.

It will be much cheaper to replace the bearings before they destroy the hubs.

you can re-use the axle nuts.

The bearings go bad from the nut not being tight enough from the factory.

Once the damage is done, tightening axle nuts MIGHT not fix it.

There are many stages of damage: noise, shifting races, ruined hub, ruined bearing.

If done properly, the axle nut tsb is a one time job, good for life.

I recommend using the old nuts.

On a car that has never had this done, the stake mark will move from 12 oclock to 2 oclock.

Cleaning the rust and greasing the spline only hides the popping noise. Now you've lost your indicator that the nuts may not be tight enough.

If you want your bearings and hubs to last forever, dont pull the axles. just do the nut. PROVIDED the axles are not seized in the hub. If you can tap them in a little bit with a hammer once the nut is off you're ok.

Yes. Any rotational noises from the rear of the car can be due to axle nuts not being tight enough.
