it doesn't look like your mechanic unstaked the nut...

AP1 and AP2 axles are identical.

I would bet that you have more going on than just the axle nut breaking. If you read my thread, it typically comes from a bad hub or something that is applying a cyclic shearing load that eventually leads to the stud failing. I would look further than just replacing the axle. My bet is that you have a bad hub or something is going in with the wheel bearing.

The op's axle stud broke when it was torqued, you think this cyclical stress was what lead to failure?

The axle nut broke when I was trying to replace the hub and bearing. That stuff is still going to get replaced.

I found a used axle off a parted out ap2. Seller wants $100. He's located 4 hours away and if you guys think it looks good I will have him ship it out. LMK.

The axle is rusted but is it worth it?

I am not sure I understand how this failed trying to replace the hub and bearing seeing that the nut is unstaked. Was an attempt made to remove it still staked? It seems that if this nut was still factory torqued the nut would be found to be extremely easy to remove, seemingly much less than the factory 180 ft lbs.

Yes, the mechanic did not un-stake the axle nut. I have previously replaced the bearing two years ago from Honda and this is the second time that this part has failed. I don't have much confidence at the people working at this shop.

rust is no big deal- clean it, paint it, and away you go.

The mechanic you used- i'll bet- just put his big effin impact gun on the unstaked nut and went to town with all 1200 lbs ft or torque. Sounds like he owes you an axle. a new, $800 OEM axle.

I have to agree. Based on the photo, the shop owes you an axle.

This is what happened. Don't let him remove and replace your other wheels. You'll never be able to remove them, again.
