Axle Nut 220 or 240
#13
I have this clicking problem, but i was told although it can be temporarily fixed, the problem most likely will come back and is a sign of a bad rear wheel bearing.
i keep going back and forth between just replacing the nuts on both sides, ( less than $10 ) and replacing the rear bearings on both sides ( a couple hundred or more ).

Re-use the nuts. they are fine, plus re-using is good for reference.
You stand a 90% chance of full cure just by tightening the axle nuts.
If rotational noise continues (if it's axle nut related, not brakes) you will need bearings, and possibly hubs (part that holds the 5 studs)

Yeah, mine made squeeking/creaking noises last summer. It took me longer than it should have to realize that it was a loose axle nut. I tightened it tighter, noise went away for a while but came back.
I tightened it like Billman described, and the squeaks/creaks went away. But alas, the bearing started making rumbling noises. I've got the new parts now and just have to get someone to press them together. I cannot see any indication of a problem on the hub, so I'm just replacing the bearing.

you will know right away if the hub is bad, once you press it apart. The inner bearing races should be a press fit on the hub. On a bad hub they will spin free.

Thanks everybody. It does indeed go from the 12 o'clock to 2 o'clock position. Probaby no need to check torque, just follow that. Cleaning the face of the joint can only help as well. I screwed up the nuts myself on the second try, I opened the "stake" point with a punch and that probably cracked the edge of the nut. I got the new nuts yesterday, at about 17 dollars each, and put them on to the new recommended torque. That should do it. This site is a very useful tool indeed. Once again, thank you.
Most sincerely,
Joe
