(axle bucket) Inner CV joint swap DIY with pics

Great. I ended up performing this DIY on Saturday. It was pretty easy, all it cost me was the grease, about $15 for the container. I ended up reusing my boot clamps. My slight vibrations on acceleration seem to have gone away, although my cups didn't have any serious pitting in them, just a small wear mark developing. It's an 06 with 104k miles for reference.

So I did the CV Bucket swap yesterday. After lowering the car, I had a pronounced vibration under acceleration, 3rd or 4th gear between 3000-5000 RPM. (MY00 with 112K miles) Pulled the buckets and had the same pitting shown in the thread. Here is mine for comparison:
Excuse the greasy lens. Its amazing how much vibration that little scoring can cause. I made the mistake of dropping one of the CV bearings into the passenger side cup. No damage done, but you will know it if you do! Pulled that cup back off and set it properly and its good to go.
Let me tell you, the car is incredibly smooth now! No more vibrations at all. Cost me ~$15 for the Redline grease and a few hours of time. I did not remove the entire axle, as I did not have a ball joint popper nor a 36mm socket to re-torque the axle nuts. Was a bit more time consuming, but not too bad. I can say the the rear upper A arm bolt on the passenger side is a bitch to get to--you need to compress the spring a little and you can get it with a ratchet extension.
I think I have finally tamed most of the harshness out of this car now---between the AP1v2 clutch and this, the car feels as smooth as I think it ever will.
Thanks again to S2KI, Billman and everyone that posted to this thread!!!

Depends what the cup is made of.

My ap1 has 180,000 miles on it, had HORRIBLE VIBRATION from the rear under acceleration ,I just did the axle cup swap, and put axle spacer, my car feels like I just drove out of the dealer ship no BULL... man I'm in heaven, just saying I highly recommend this .

Hey guys, I'm new to this forum and have read a lot on this thread about this problem. I have owned an ap1 02 since 04. and have done HPDE's for 6 yrs with no problems other than consumables, pads, rotors, tires and hubs. I have been running a stock square set up, 17x9. This past spring I have developed this exact issue (vibration under acceleration), so I replaced both rear axles, which includes the CV joint (correct me if I'm wrong). The problem was BETTER , but still noticeable. I did another 5-6 track days and it did not get better or worse. Over the winter I decided to try something new and put D2 coilovers on, which of course lowered the car about 1.5". I had local Professional trans am/Miata race team corner balance and set up. Now the vibration is back as bad as ever! Car only has 66K miles on it, and just seems weird that the axle buckets would wear that bad, so quickly. I am prepared to swap them around, but thought somebody might be able to shed some light on my situation. Do you still feel confident that the swap would solve the problem? If so why did I still feel a slight vibration when I put the new axles in? (again, it was a very slight vibration that I could live with) Should I get axle spacers just in case I need them?
Any input would appreciated,
Thanks
