Turned out mine was a partially seizing caliper... something I seems to have a lot of lately
Is this the MacGyver from way back when in Boston? How the heck are ya? Long time, like 8 years!

You got it You ran like a cheap ho to Cali with barely a wave goodbye and left the rest of us in the cold Boston winters. But I smartened up and moved to Florida again.

And then I got dumber again and moved to MD where they have snow.

the labor involved with swapping in new axles will be similar to flipping the cv joint swap.

Yes, mine is stock and suffered this failure.

BTW, to echo the other contributors, I did this without removing the axles (just left the axle nut on) and it took ~3.5 hours making two trips for parts (my usual pitman ball joint separate was too small, and I had to use a two prong gear/pulley puller).

And to contribute something: I found it was easiest to loosen/break free the axle fasteners by using the parking brake and breaker bar on the bolts. With this method I didn't need to hold the nut with a wrench while breaking the bolts.
I also did this without removing the axles, and would like to offer:

before I put the wheels back on I went forward and reversed to check for any play in the axles. Driver's side had a bit of wobble in it, so I checked and...sure enough, when I was under the car (cramped, should have put my jackstands up higher), I had put the driver's side boot back on 'indian style', by feel, and I had not seen one of the bearings slide through the mass of CV grease from one slot to another, there was one slot empty and one doubled up! yikes, just a point of caution if you are not using a lift or tall stands, make sure each of the three bearings finds it's own home.

Shakes are gone (170K miles), feels like new. Or what I suspect it would have felt like had I ever owned a new one - RJ

sorry to revive a kinda old topic, but had a question.

if i were to wanting to remove just the inner cv joint, what would i need to loosen/remove on the outer side? when removing from the inside, do you remove the boot while the inner cv joint is still in? is there enough room to pull it out of the diff?

oh btw, im kinda a big guy, would it be too cramped?
doing this this weekend, its really bothering me now.

thanks for any replies
I have the same question, what do you HAVE to remove on the outer side of the axel to be able to do the cv bucket swap? (without having to take out the axel completely of the car)
Sorry if it's dumb question but I have read this whole threads and everybody kinda says something different...

Also how much grease should refill each bucket with?
