It's been sitting in the garage for more than a day so I went out to go start it just to see if it would make the noise again and what do you know - it didn't. <sigh>
This one is going to be difficult to troubleshoot since its not reproducable. Thinking back, I seem to recall one of the previous times where it made the sound after the engine fired and my finger was off the starter by at least a second or two.
Thanks for the thoughts so far.

I'm going to drive it this morning so maybe I'll hear it again

Mine did the same thing this morning. Sounded exactly like you described it and only did it for a second. Then I tried to reproduce it and it wouldn't do it.
I'm not too worried about it. I have read of other people's S doing the same thing once in a while. I really don't think it is anything that is going to harm the engine. But I do think it is either the bendix in the starter motor or possibly the air pump motor. More than likely it's the starter motor though. Which is an easy fix. (at least an easy fix on all my past vehicles)

What type of ambient temperatures are you starting the car in?
Is it cold?
I had several Hondas with Pulley whine when the car would start in cold conditions, after sitting.
After the car was warm any subsequent restarts would show no signs of any abnormal sounds or vibration.

It was about 38 degrees here this morning when I started mine. But this is the first time it's ever done it. It really does sound like it's the starter though.

Sounds like the slip clutch on the starter to me due to the starter not disengaging quickly enough - maybe worth taking the starter out and giving the pinion area a good clean up (no idea how much work this would be!). You could try getting someone to listen with a screwdriver on the starter when you fire up to see if this is where the noise is coming from.
Just a guess though.
